Heart of Communication: Listen like a Buddha
Courses beginning January 23, 2017
Listening and communicating with empathy and compassion makes friendships, family life and workplaces both more gracious and affirming. When listened to well, people feel safe to be themselves and are able to contribute their best.
Compassion is an inherent human quality deeply rooted in our brains, bodies, and hearts. There are scientific studies that suggest there are physical benefits to listening to others and practicing compassion — people who practice it produce 100 percent more DHEA, which is a hormone that counteracts the aging process, and 23 percent less cortisol — the “stress hormone.” The main benefit is that it helps us be happier, and brings those around us more happiness.
The Heart of Communication class given at various places in Madison for several years now is being offered at MATC Truax. It’s a great opportunity to learn how to deeply listen with your heart and fully support others, without judgement or advice. It is also a chance to express yourself and to feel understood and accepted. Practice will be in small groups and pairs, with participants taking turns listening, talking and responding.
The guiding principles of the class are based on Buddhist philosophies, and will include Buddhist chanting meditations, however one doesn’t need to become Buddhist to practice and benefit.
